The Style of Diner en Blanc Okanagan

When the worldwide phenomenon Diner en Blanc arrives in the Okanagan this summer, it presents a unique opportunity to wear white head to toe while being part of something magical.

Described as a secret ‘pop-up picnic’ Diner en Blanc Okanagan will see hundreds of guests descend upon a public location in the valley; all wearing white, and carrying fully packed picnic baskets.  The outfits are as important as the food and fun during this unique experiential event.  Unlike stuffy dinner parties, Dîner en Blanc encourages the social aspect of a community dinner party while creating camaraderie with the dress code and creativity with the menu selection.

True to Dîner en Blanc tradition and rules, guests are required to dress elegantly, entirely in white.  Even white shoes are highly recommended.  Gloves, a fabulous hat or fascinator, white jacket, a mask and even a white wig add to the white theme, while also expressing our individuality.  At last year’s unofficial ‘Okanagan White Dinner’, tuxedos, evening gowns and even a wedding gown were part of the evening’s fashion parade.  In a nod to the royal wedding, hats and fascinators were in abundance around the rows of dinner tables.  At Dîner en Blanc, wearing white head to toe is required - not a fashion faux pas.

Although Dîner en Blanc may be a pop-up picnic, plaid napkins and fried chicken are no were in sight!  White picnic baskets are packed with white linens, white dishes, real cutlery and amazing food. Guests are requested to pack a 3-course meal and imagination can run wild with the menu planning.  Last year saw lobster velouté poured from a warming thermos, an amazing cheese course on a tiered plate complete with grapes & strawberries, quinoa salads, breads, and crème brulé for dessert.  Many couples shared the menu planning with each preparing an individual course and dining ‘family style.’  This year, Dîner en Blanc Okanagan has teamed with Basket Case Picnics who will prepare the food portion of your picnic basket for you for an additional fee, for those who prefer not to do it themselves or are seeking a special treat and Haywire Winery will ensure you have a bottle of wine to accompany your meal.

The food and fashion of Dîner en Blanc are the key ingredients  in the magic of this unusual event.  We’ve all been to the traditional ‘rubber chicken’ dinners and a usual picnic in the park, but Dîner en Blanc is an innovative experience that organizers Alison Love, Spatula Media + Communications and Christina Ferreira of Impact Events are sure Okanagan residents will embrace.  Dîner en Blanc events are now held in 35 cities and 23 countries around the world.  The Okanagan event is the smallest of the cities but with a background of award winning wine and a culinary destination, it’s a natural to be part of this unique experience.

To better understand the reasoning behind event’s rules and regulations, we encourage you to visit the official website www.Okanagan.dinerenblanc.info and Facebook page www.fb.com/DinerEnBlanc.Okanagan to view images and videos from last year’s events.
